Racism Today
"...Everybody jumped on him. beat the hell out of him... Everybody was hitting him or kicking him. One guy was kicking at his spine. Another guy hitting on the side of his face... He was unconscious. He was bleeding. Everybody had blood on their
forearms. We ran back up the hill laughing...
He should have died.... He lost so much blood he turned white. He got what he deserved" (Ridgeway 167.)
The skinheads who performed this random act of racial violence in 1990, had no reason to brutally beat their victim other than the fact that he was Mexican (Ridgeway 167.) Racism is objectively defined as any practice of ethic discrimination or
segregation. Fortunately, racial violence is steadily declining as the turn of the century approaches. Now a new form of racism, covert racism, has recently sprung up from the pressures of the political correctness. This new form of racism, although
lowly declining, stills show high signs of support. "Racism is still strongly supported in today"s society (Gudorf 3.)
The three different basic forms of racism, open racism, violent racism, and covert racism all express hatred towards distinct ethic groups. These basic forms of racism, although different in form, all have the same main purpose, to promote racism.
Open racism expresses freedom of racial thought and speech. Open racists racism is allowed in our society because of the First Amendment. Open racism is currently non-existence in out society today, because it is considered political incorrect and soc
lly unacceptable.
Violent racism promotes racism through violence, fear, and persuasionary tactics. This form of racism is not protected by the First Amendment because it promotes violence to express its ideas. Unfortunately many violent racial groups claim that
they don"t promote violence, and therefore these groups are protected by the First Amendment because not enough sufficient evidence exists to prove their violent behavior.
The three main causes for racism are : racism has become part of our heritage, right-wing racial and political groups, and pride in one"s own race. Frequently thought history the ethic group with the most power has assumed that its race and culture
are superior to others. The same incident occurred in America with the introduction of slaves. Throughout American history, racism has strongly prevalent. "Racism"s roots lie deep within the foundation of our society" (Tucker19).
The following groups represent various racist groups found throughout the U.S.: John Birch Society, Ku Klux Klan, Knights of the KKK. Invisible Empire, NAAWP, White Aryan Nations, The Order, and National Alliance. All of these groups are
given the freedom to express their ideas of racism because of the First Amendment. "Now , however, the issue of race has become more complex and at times more complex because, there are now multiple agendas including affirmative action, quotas, and set
sides" (Piazza 34). In the bible in Ps 69:14- "be delivered from them that hate" and in Ps 69:4 "They that hate me without a cause". In our catechism it says that "Deliberate hatred is contrary to charity. Hatred of the neighbor is a sin when one del
erately wishes him evil. Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm. "But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven." (2303).
If all men are created equal, then why should differences in race matter? Unfortunately our society has not lived up to the standards set by its forefathers. Racism, especially covert racism, still affects our society socially. In the bible it said
t to hate your neighbors, so why do people do it. They say that they believe in God so why do they hate somebody just because of what they believe in or what color they are. People need to get over the barriers of color and religion or even sex and lo
at each person as individuals.
My personal action statement would be to treat other people with respect and not let their views influence my views. No matter what people think I can"t change their views but I can try to do it. If a person was raised up believing that all black peo
e were to be hated them I can"t change their mind. I hope that in due time that people learn to get over this thing of Racism and look at each others as individuals not just color, sex or religion.
